Prioritizing your sexual health is key. If you’re sexually active, it’s important to get tested regularly for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Today’s Choice Women’s Center is here for you with free and confidential STD testing. Receive the results you need in a timely manner and learn how to place yourself in safer situations.

What is an STD?

A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is contracted mainly through sexual activity or bodily fluids like blood or semen. They’re caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites and can be asymptomatic. You may feel that something is “amiss” or have an STD without knowing.

Common symptoms of STDs include:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual or odorous vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Sore, swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Lower abdominal pain

You may think you aren’t at risk of developing an STD. But anyone who is sexually active could contract one. And pregnancy doesn’t prevent STDs. In fact, an STD could be passed to your child during pregnancy or childbirth, causing complications like premature birth or even stillbirth.

Regular testing and treatment helps with detection and prevention. If left untreated, STDs can cause complications such as:

  • Eye inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Heart disease
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Certain cancers (i.e., cervical cancer)

These complications can be painful, lifelong, and require frequent medical appointments. Staying on top of your health is prudent, and regular testing provides an opportunity to learn about effective prevention techniques. Having one sexual partner, being honest about your sexual history, and abstaining from illegal drug or excessive alcohol use are all excellent techniques.
