Common Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

Pregnancy signs and symptoms vary widely among women. And some symptoms of pregnancy can be indicative of other health conditions, stress, and more.

The following are possible signs and symptoms of pregnancy:

  • Missed period
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Nasal congestion
  • Food aversions
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Moodiness
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Light spotting

If you experience any of these symptoms or if you’ve had unprotected sexual intercourse, consider taking a pregnancy test.

Taking a Test

If you think you may be pregnant, it’s best to test several days after a missed period or a few weeks after sexual intercourse. This allows hCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, to increase in your body. HCG is a hormone only produced during pregnancy, and you want to give it time to be produced in your body.

Many women use at-home pregnancy tests to determine whether they’re pregnant. But if you take the test too early or inaccurately, you may receive a false result. That’s why it’s best to confirm your pregnancy with a lab-quality test.

If your pregnancy test is positive, you’ll also want an obstetric ultrasound to provide valuable pregnancy information and help you discern the next steps.
