Adoption is not a decision that should be made lightly. It can be an emotionally difficult choice for birth mothers, but the right support system and resources make a big difference.
Today’s Choice Women’s Center provides trustworthy adoption information for women with unplanned pregnancies. We can also connect you with adoption agencies if you feel this decision is right for you.
Considering Adoption?
Adoption can feel like a complex choice. While it’s untrue that you are “giving up” a child, placing your child in an adoptive family can be emotional. You may struggle to make sense of how you’re feeling or what the future holds.
But if you want to carry your pregnancy to term but don’t feel ready to parent, adoption could be the right decision. You can choose the adoptive family, form a relationship with the child if you choose, and know that they’re safe and cared for.
Keep reading to learn about the main adoption plans available in the United States:
Open Adoption
With an open adoption, you’ll select the adoptive family and form a relationship with them. You can communicate with the child through letters, phone calls, and visits. This plan offers the most flexibility and freedom to establish contact on your own terms.
Semi-Open Adoption
While more uncommon, semi-open adoption allows you to have contact with the adoptive family. However, you’ll communicate with them through a third party like an adoption agency or attorney.
Closed Adoption
A closed adoption offers the most privacy. Identifying records are sealed, so you won’t know the adoptive family, and they won’t know you. All information will remain confidential. Sometimes, birth mothers choose this option if they’re in an unsafe environment or feel uncomfortable with having contact.
Making Your Adoption Decision
No one has the right to coerce you into choosing adoption or selecting a specific plan. As the birth mother, you are in control. You won’t pay for adoption services and may even receive financial and material support.
Today’s Choice Women’s Center will discuss adoption during an options consultation. We’re here to provide the details you need.
