If you’ve had an abortion, you might wonder whether it could affect your ability to conceive in the future. While abortion generally does not impact fertility, certain procedures may carry risks that could influence future pregnancies. Understanding these potential effects can help you make informed choices for your reproductive health.

Medical Abortion
A medical abortion, often called the “abortion pill,” involves taking two drugs within the first ten weeks of pregnancy. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is essential for pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Medical abortions typically do not increase the risk of fertility issues or future pregnancy complications. Most women experience a return to their normal menstrual cycle within a couple of weeks and can immediately conceive again.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is a procedure that removes the pregnancy from the uterus using a combination of suction, drugs, or small surgical tools. Some studies suggest a slight increase in the risk of preterm birth or low birth weight in subsequent pregnancies after surgical abortion.
There are additional risks that could impact fertility, such as the possibility of uterine scarring, which can cause Asherman syndrome. While rare, this condition can make it more difficult to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term.
